Citizenship Education
At Jiemin Primary, National Education (NE) is an integral part of our Character and Citizenship Education (CCE). We believe in nurturing students who understand their identity as Singaporeans and who are equipped with the knowledge, values, and confidence to contribute meaningfully to our nation.
Through engaging and authentic experiences, our students explore Singapore’s rich history, appreciate the strength of our multicultural heritage, and reflect on the shared values that bind us together. These experiences include interactive CCE lessons, meaningful NE Commemorative Events, thought-provoking Social Studies discussions, and collaborative Cohort Learning Journeys. These platforms encourage students to make connections between classroom learning and real-world contexts, deepening their understanding of Singapore’s journey and the challenges we face as a nation.
Opportunities such as outdoor learning experiences, and school-wide events further support the development of important life skills such as critical thinking, communication, collaboration, and empathy. As students reflect on Singapore’s past and envision our future, they grow into confident, adaptable individuals with a strong sense of purpose and belonging.
Ultimately, we aim to develop active and caring citizens who are ready to shape a better tomorrow for themselves, their communities, and Singapore.
Strengthening Citizenship Dispositions:
Our NE programmes is intentionally designed to cultivate key citizenship dispositions in our students:

Total Defence Day (TDD)
Total Defence Day (TDD) holds a meaningful place in the hearts of our students and staff at Jiemin Primary School. It is a time for us to reflect on the fall of Singapore in 1942 and, more importantly, to understand how each of us can contribute to protecting our nation in today’s context. At Jiemin, we believe in nurturing resilient, responsible, and united citizens. Through engaging activities, our students learn about the six pillars of Total Defence – military, civil, economic, social, digital, and psychological. These lessons go beyond the classroom, helping our students understand that every Singaporean has a role to play in safeguarding our nation.
From interactive scenarios to classroom discussions, our commemoration of TDD encourages students to think critically about real-world challenges such as pandemics, cyber threats, and misinformation. More importantly, it fosters a deep sense of unity, national pride, and readiness to face the future together.
By helping students see the relevance of Total Defence in their daily lives, Jiemin Primary School aims to empower them to become active contributors to Singapore’s safety, strength, and shared future.
International Friendship Day (IFD)
At Jiemin Primary School, International Friendship Day is more than just a celebration. It is a meaningful occasion that highlights the importance of friendship, cultural appreciation, and unity in our increasingly interconnected world.
Each year, our students take part in engaging activities that deepen their understanding of the diverse cultures that make up our local and global communities. From exploring traditional music and customs to participating in collaborative class activities, our students experience firsthand the beauty of cultural exchange. These shared experiences not only promote empathy and cooperation, but also cultivate the skills needed to thrive in a globalised world,cross-cultural understanding, mutual respect, and a global mindset.
Through IFD, we celebrate with our Jiemin family the belief that friendship knows no borders, and that every act of kindness and understanding helps build a stronger, more cohesive society, one where every individual plays a part in defending and uplifting our nation.
Racial Harmony Day
Racial Harmony Day is a meaningful and cherished occasion at Jiemin Primary School. Commemorated annually on 21 July, it marks the anniversary of the 1964 racial riots and serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of maintaining peace and unity in our multicultural society.
At Jiemin, Racial Harmony Day goes beyond celebration. It is a time for reflection, learning, and connection. Our students are immersed in activities that promote appreciation and respect for Singapore’s cultural diversity. These include traditional games, costume showcases, interactive booths, and storytelling sessions that bring to life the unique customs of our major ethnic groups.
Through these experiences, our students learn that harmony does not happen by chance. It takes empathy, understanding, and collaboration. Racial Harmony Day is not just a one-day event at Jiemin Primary. It is part of our ongoing commitment to nurturing students who will contribute to a cohesive and inclusive Singapore.
National Day Celebrations
National Day is a meaningful occasion for our students and staff to come together as one school community to celebrate Singapore’s independence. Held annually on 9 August, this commemoration marks our nation's emergence as a sovereign country in 1965 and serves as a reminder of the strength, resilience, and unity that define us as Singaporeans.
The celebration begins with a solemn flag-raising ceremony, where students sing the national anthem and recite the pledge. This symbolic moment reinforces a sense of loyalty and national pride, reminding everyone of our shared identity and commitment to the nation.
Following the ceremony, students are treated to a vibrant National Day concert featuring student-led performances that showcase Singapore’s cultural diversity and community spirit. These performances reflect the creativity and talent of our students while fostering a deeper appreciation for our shared heritage.
Our students will also be engaged in meaningful classroom activities that give them a deeper appreciation of Singapore’s journey and the values that have shaped our nation. Through reflections, discussions and creative tasks, they explore our country's rich heritage and think about their role in building a better future.
National Day at Jiemin is not only a celebration of the past, but also a call to the next generation to carry Singapore’s story forward with pride and purpose.
NE Show Experience
The National Education (NE) Show is a meaningful highlight of our Primary 5 students’ learning journey. Held in July each year, it offers our students a memorable opportunity to witness the full-dress rehearsal of the National Day Parade (NDP), igniting a strong sense of national pride and unity.
From the moment our students gather in school, dressed in red and brimming with excitement, the day is filled with anticipation. After a safety briefing and the collection of goodie bags, they set off with their teachers and friends, ready to experience one of Singapore’s most iconic celebrations.
At the Padang, they are immersed in a vibrant atmosphere. From energetic performances and marching contingents to the spectacular sight of the Red Lions and dazzling fireworks, the experience is truly unforgettable. The students sing along to familiar songs, cheer with joy, and wave their flags proudly. It was a moving experience that helped them understand the strength of community and the pride of being Singaporean.
Beyond the celebrations, the NE Show offered our students a deeper appreciation of Singapore’s journey, from past struggles to present successes, and the values that have shaped who we are today. Through this experience, they gained insights into the resilience, unity, and shared responsibility that define our nation.
It is our hope that this special event will continue to inspire our students to carry forward the spirit of Singapore with commitment and confidence. More than just a celebration, the NE Show has become a cherished milestone in their Primary 5 year, one that will stay in their hearts for a long time to come.
NE Ambassadors
Our National Education (NE) Ambassadors play a vital role in promoting active citizenship and national pride within the school community. As positive role models, they inspire their peers through a range of meaningful contributions.
Their responsibilities include planning and leading NE-related projects, encouraging peer participation, and supporting the successful implementation of NE events such as Total Defence Day and National Day. They also assist teachers during NE classroom lessons, helping to bring Singapore’s history, values, and national identity to life for their fellow students.
Through these experiences, NE Ambassadors grow as confident leaders who embody the spirit of service, resilience, and unity.
