English Language
Explore Jiemin Primary School's English Language programmes, from reading support and enrichment to competitions that build confident communicators.
At Jiemin Primary School, we believe that every pupil can grow to love English and communicate with confidence and voice. This belief sits at the heart of everything we do, inspiring in every child a genuine joy for the English Language through rich, meaningful experiences that help them find their voice, connect with others, and express themselves with clarity and purpose.
English is the foundation for how your child learns, connects, and expresses themselves throughout life. Through nurturing both hearts and minds, we develop empathetic communicators, discerning readers, and creative inquirers who use language confidently and thoughtfully. Our pupils are encouraged to think critically about what they read, communicate meaningfully with those around them, and use language creatively to explore ideas not just within the classroom, but in their communities and in the wider world.
We are committed to ensuring that every pupil, regardless of where they begin their journey, has the opportunity to discover what English can do for them and what they, in turn, can do with it.
Our learning approach
English comes alive when children have real opportunities to use it. In our lessons, pupils read engaging stories, share their ideas, listen to one another, and write for different purposes and audiences. We encourage every child to speak up, ask questions, and think carefully about what they read and hear. Learning is hands-on and collaborative through discussions, group activities, and creative writing, children develop confidence in communicating clearly across different situations. We connect lessons to real-life contexts that children can relate to, and use technology purposefully to enrich their learning. Together, these experiences build strong language foundations while nurturing curious, thoughtful and confident communicators.
Signature learning experiences
At Jiemin Primary School, we go beyond the classroom to create memorable experiences that bring English to life. Our signature programmes are designed to inspire every pupil to find their voice, connect with others, and develop a genuine love for the language.
kidsREAD Club
Through interactive reading sessions, students discover the joy of books and develop positive reading habits. Student volunteers from Yishun Secondary School serve as reading buddies and role models, making reading a collaborative and enjoyable experience while strengthening students' literacy and comprehension skills.
P1 and P2 Learning Journeys
Our Lower Primary Learning Journeys to the Zoo and Sg Nippon Farm give younger students authentic, real-world contexts to explore language meaningfully and with curiosity.
Supporting every learner
We recognise that students develop their literacy skills at different rates. Students who require additional support receive targeted help through programmes such as the Learning Support Programme (LSP), Reading Remediation Programme (RRP) and School-based Dyslexia Remediation (SDR).
Through structured and focused support, students strengthen foundational reading, spelling and comprehension skills while building greater confidence and independence in learning English.
Stretching our learners
Students with strong interest and aptitude in English are provided with opportunities to deepen their appreciation and use of the language through challenging reading, writing and communication experiences. These opportunities encourage students to think critically, express themselves creatively and further develop their individual strengths in English.
Together, these experiences reflect our belief that English is best learnt when it is part of everyday life.
